Pachelbel's Canon in D
Arranged and performed by Eric Chappelle for multiple electric violins

In 2003, shortly after purchasing a Boss Loop Station, a device that allows for realtime loop and overdub recording, I began using it in accompanying dance classes. Combined with an electric violin and a guitar multi-effects processor, I was able to create varied and textured arrangements on the spot.

About the same time, I purchased a CD called Ostinato by Jordi Savall, the violes de gambe player and director of Hesperion XXI. Simply put, an ostinato is the classical term for a musical loop - or a repeating line that underlies an entire piece of music. A version of the Pachelbel "Kanon und Gigue" appears on the CD in a brighter tempo and more energetic performance than one usually associates with this wedding staple.

That became my inspiration for this 2004 recording for Dance Fremont's 8th Annual Rite of Spring Concert. The dance was titled "Ballet in Canon," Vivian Little, choreography.
